At ProCare Restoration we’ve had many customers who had no idea that mold was growing in their attic. That is, they had no idea until it had infiltrated so many areas of the home that it was making them sick.
Attics are one of mold’s favorite places to grow–right up there with bathrooms and basements. But a lot of people forget to check their attics when searching for mold in their homes. This is a huge mistake.
Mold grows in attics for a number of reasons. Since mold can only grow where there is excessive moisture, you have to take into account how attics can get too moist and trap that moisture.
One way that this often happens is if you have a leak in your roof, even a small one. The attic will be the first place affected and you may not even notice the leak until it gets so large that it shows up on your ceiling. By then, mold has probably already started to grow in the attic.
Another common cause of attic mold is bathroom fans. If you have a moisture reducing fan in your bathroom, check to see if it releases the moisture outside or into your attic. If it goes into your attic, you’re in trouble. Mold has most likely already started to grow there, so get it inspected right away.
Furthermore, attics tend to have little to no ventilation. Without windows, fans, or any other way to release the moisture, it inevitably gets trapped there.
If you’re scared of entering the attic yourself to check (which is totally understandable), there are some signs you can look out for that may signal that mold is growing in your attic.
Leaky roofs, of course, can be a sign that mold is growing there. You should also watch out for spots on your walls or ceilings. Check around ceiling vents for spots as well, and check your bathroom fans to see whether or not they’re releasing moisture into the attic.
If you see any of these signs in your home or if you’re exhibiting symptoms of mold exposure, schedule a mold inspection with ProCare Restoration immediately. The last thing you want is for the problem to worsen.
Neglecting to treat mold can permanently damage your home and your health. So be careful and watch out for mold lurking in the attic! ProCare is here to help.
