What’s hiding behind those walls? And what’s hiding in them? Water damage can start out as something you can’t see, even if the area is exposed. Here are the seven most common structural problems we encounter.
Cracks in the plaster.
If plaster integrity issues go unaddressed, especially in basements or other foundational areas, more than just those walls will be at risk. Consult a professional.
Curled or bubbled wall coverings (like wallpaper).
Paint and wallpaper are the most commonly affected parts of a water-damaged interior. Too much moisture can lead to bubbling, curling, and cracking coverings.
Electrical fixtures and wiring.
Pay close attention to all electrical work, and always call a professional to inspect your wiring after your home is hit with water damage.
Insulation’s R-value.
The Department of Energy defines “R-value” as “an insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow … measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value — the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness.” Insulation can become less effective or destroyed altogether by serious water damage.
Integrity of the drywall.
Like plaster damage, crumbling walls will only lead to bigger problems down the road.
Moisture retention in the moldings.
“Moldings” are generally the seams where the ceiling meets the wall, or where the wall meets the floor. You need to ensure that all of your home is dry after water damage. Many people focus on drying the carpet and their loose property, when all parts need to be addressed.
Non-porous paint.
When decorating your home, make sure to do your research. Some problems can be alleviated (or are entirely preventable!) with the right precautions. Until the water hits though, many don’t even consider these things. But non-porous paint can be a good idea for curbing water flow and moisture absorption beyond the walls.
