It’s common knowledge that bathrooms are a hotspot for mold growth. Many of our customers here at ProCare Restoration come to us looking for mold inspections or mold remediations in their homes’ bathrooms. That’s why we wanted to write about the link between exhaust fans and bathroom mold to help our customers understand why and how to prevent bathroom mold.
Since bathrooms tend to stay pretty warm and they obviously get damp after showers, they’re perfect breeding grounds for mold. Mold loves any place with excess moisture where it’s warm enough for it to grow and spread.
Oftentimes you’ll find mold growing in the grout between tiles or along corners in your sink or shower, since these places offer more darkness and seclusion and they trap moisture better. This where the exhaust fans come in. Exhaust fans take the moisture out of the air that occurs when you shower. This prevents water from settling into these nooks and crevices and allowing mold to grow.
Though it’s important to thoroughly clean (and dry) your bathroom frequently in order to prevent mold, the main thing you need is an exhaust fan. Between that and leaving your bathroom door open when you’re not in it, you’ll allow the air to flow freely and stop moisture from settling onto surfaces.
Exhaust fans are an absolute must for every single bathroom, especially if it has a shower or bath in it. It will save you a lot of time, money, and grief if you install one in your bathroom before the onslaught of mold.
One thing to watch out for though, is where the exhaust fan releases excess moisture. Whether you have a fan already or you’re about to install one, make sure to check this. Sometimes fans are installed to release moisture into the building’s attic. This will stop mold from growing in your bathroom, but it will also just transfer the issue to your attic. So make extra sure your fan releases moisture to the outside!
If you do have mold in your bathroom (or in your attic) as a result of the excess moisture, schedule a mold inspection with us today. We’ll inspect the issue, give you an estimate, and even remediate your mold, should you choose to hire us!
